Overdrive mechanism?

In my uncle's old Triumph Spitfire, there is a switch on the top of the gear lever labelled overdrive. He's told me it's a second gearbox which doesn't require a clutch and the reason you don't see them around anymore is that a five forward gear gearbox is far better than a four forward gear gearbox with an overdrive.

So how does it work, why don't you need to engage the clutch and why is it a switch and not a second gear lever.

I kind of miss my old Volvo with electric overdrive... You could engage the OD in any gear, so in effect, you had an 8-speed transmission.

Your Uncle is mostly right. With modern 5-speed manual transmissions, the 5th gear is normally an overdrive ratio, so when you shift to 5th gear, you are really using overdrive. It's less confusing for people who don't know how to deal with a separate overdrive unit.
