When your Tank needs Septic Repair
When you move into a home with a septic system you should first insist on a complete septic inspection. That way, if septic repair is in your future, you know about it when you purchase the home. A good septic system company will do a thorough inspection of the system, but make sure you hire them, and make sure that you don’t use the company that has been servicing the system up to this point.
A good inspection should involve not only checking things over visually, but also the tank should be opened and viewed to the degree possible. A dye test should be run to see if there are any leaks. The baffles and lids should be inspected for wear and tear and any connections that are reachable should be checked over too.
If the tank itself is failing you will need to investigate the cause and then determine if it can be repaired or if it needs replacing. The most likely tanks to need repair are made of concrete and metal. Metal tanks rust; once that process begins the tank is unsafe. People have fallen through the tops and covers of metal tanks not realizing their danger, and have died, so if you have any sign of rust on or in a metal tank, please replace it promptly with a polyurethane or fiberglass unit.
Concrete Tanks are Prone to Problems-
Concrete tanks can sometimes be repaired if the cracks are small and not in critical areas. To do the job properly someone will need to enter the tank and do the “point,” or repair, work. Most septic companies don’t actually do this work, but have a contact that will. Tree roots are a frequent cause of concrete tank cracks, so avoid planting any trees near the location of the tank.
Another common source of damage to concrete tanks is driving. Although these tanks and their covers are theoretically rated to support a vehicles weight, it is a very bad idea to test the concept. The area over the tank and leach system should be treated with respect to avoid excessive compaction of the soil and to protect the components of the system.
Other pieces of the system can need repair as well – the baffles, the intake and outlet pipes and the leach field are all subject to problems over time. The flooding in Georgia is causing region-wide septic system failures and difficulties. While all these systems will need to be inspected properly once the waters recede, some will also be in need of repairs. If your tank has been seriously damaged, expect to replace it instead.
Unfortunately there isn’t much you can do to check your system until the waters have dried up to some degree. Your septic company is your best resource as to when to check your system and what kinds of repairs may be needed. At a minimum expect to pump out the tank and have an inspection of the drain pipes and leach field, even if you just had it done recently.
The floods have barely begun to recede, but if you own a septic system, your troubles may just be starting. Shady operators are always waiting in the wings to profit from someone else’s misery. A reputable septic company like A Town Septic will give you straight answers and help you get your system running again.
